My favorite way to take advantage of the spring + summer months is to dine outdoors. No matter if it’s breakfast, lunch, or dinner… if the weather allows I will always choose the outdoor seating option (even if it means waiting a little longer). Charleston, SC has several outdoor seating (or al fresco if you’re old school Italian) option around town! From soul food to French food and everything in between, there is something for everyone.

Growing up, I never appreciated calling James Island home. For one, Charleston wasn’t Condé Nast’s #1 city in America at the time, but also it was all I ever knew. I was certain that there were other cities that were “better”. But as I grew older and started traveling the world I began to appreciate the town that my family had called home for over a century. This month’s featured Nonprofit is Midland’s Fatherhood Coalition. As a part of the South Carolina Center for Fathers and Families network, this organization offers free community-based services and support for families and fathers in the greater Columbia area. They hope to empower Midlands Fatherhood Coalition fathers trying to rebuild their lives and their families. As someone who didn’t grow up with their father, but has had the opportunity to watch my son interact with his father daily I understand the importance of this relationship, firsthand.

This month’s featured South Carolina Non-Profit is the Emmanuel Nine Memorial. To properly honor the five clergy and four church members who were gunned down by a white supremacist at the Mother Emmanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, a memorial courtyard was built.

Not only does this memorial honor the spirit and fellowship of the Emmanuel Nine, but also serves as a place of contemplation, communion, and conversation for creating a world where racism and hate do not exist.

This past weekend was one of my favorite local events of the year. Me and some of my closest friends dawned fascinators and floral print dresses to The 87th annual Carolina Cup in Camden, South Carolina.

The morning started with a couple of sprinter vans and a ton of mimosas! We arrived at the tailgate just afternoon to a full southern spread by Mable’s Kitchen. We spent the afternoon laughing, dancing, and tailgating with craft cocktails.

Last weekend I packed the babe up and we headed down to my favorite city for the annual Charleston Wine + Food Festival. Back in 2020, it was the last event we attended before the world shutdown, so I had such fond memories of the event. In fact, memories of that event is what go me through some of the dark days during that time. So it was such a great feeling to be back knowing this meant the world really was in a better place now.

This month’s featured South Carolina Non-Profit is called Power in Changing. At-a-glance, they provide diapers to mothers in need in the Midlands, but this goes much further than a simple diaper.

Through Power in Changing, I’ve learned much more about why diaper needs matter deeply. Since many daycare facilities require parents to provide their own diapers,  if parents can’t afford them they cannot leave their children with childcare. Without childcare, the parent can’t go to work or school, furthering the cycle of poverty.

Known for their super feminine, vintage-inspired designs, LoveShackFancy has become a cult classic for many and after meeting their over-the-top founder, Rebecca Cohen, I totally understand why! What you see from the brand is just an extension of her own life. She’s fabulous in every since of the word and has built a little world for herself that she allows her customers to buy in to.

Picking pumpkins at pumpkin patches is a classic outdoor activity to celebrate the beginning of autumn and get prepared for the spookiest time of the year. Over the years, it’s become an even bigger spectacle with hayrides, games, and even petting zoos! Pumpkins are only shown off for a short time of the year, so it’s important to find the best one that fits your home. If you’re not too fond of flashy decorations, pumpkins come in all sorts of sizes, shapes, and colors.
